A California startup, Reflect Orbital, recently received approval to launch a demonstration satellite equipped with a large reflective surface designed to redirect sunlight onto Earth after sunset. The company envisions a future constellation of thousands of these “space mirrors,” capable of extending daylight for solar farms, illuminating construction sites, assisting emergency responders, and potentially providing light wherever it is requested.
At first glance, the idea seems remarkably innovative.
More renewable energy. Better disaster response. Less dependence on fossil fuels.
Those are goals many of us share.
But every technological breakthrough deserves more than excitement—it deserves careful ethical consideration.
The Night Is Not Empty
For countless species, darkness is not simply the absence of light.
It is part of life itself.
Migrating birds navigate by the stars. Sea turtles hatch under moonlight. Nocturnal mammals hunt, forage, and avoid predators in darkness. Plants, insects, and entire ecosystems have evolved around the predictable rhythm of day and night.
Humans are no different.
Our circadian rhythms—the biological clocks that regulate sleep, hormones, metabolism, and mental health—depend on natural cycles of light and darkness. Artificial light has already altered those rhythms across much of the developed world. Extending daylight from space raises questions we have only begun to ask.

None of this means innovation should stop.
Innovation has solved countless problems and will continue to play a vital role in building a more sustainable future.
But humility should grow alongside our technological capability.
The more power we have to alter our planet—even from orbit—the greater our responsibility becomes.
