George Orwell’s 1984 is “widely regarded as the most scathing and effective refutation” of totalitarianism (Wayne A. Rebhorn). One of the most salient and well-known features of this masterpiece is its inclusion of frighteningly perverse and dishonest phrases—giving rise to the adjective “Orwellian”—that are used to disinform and manipulate the public and destroy the language.
