After several secretly filmed videos have repeatedly revealed horrific animal abuse—some of which was labeled by Dr. Bernard Rollin, Distinquished Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, as “the most gratuitous, sustained, sadistic animal abuse I have ever seen”—at slaughterhouses, the Iowa legislature is attempting to protect the animal slaughter industry from further exposure to the public eye.
While the proposed law has little chance of surviving First Amendment review, the law may serve as a temporary way to intimidate journalists from covering animal abuse.
