Does Sonny Perdue’s nomination contradict what the position itself should ideally represent or will the former governor surprise us by transferring his generosity toward domesticated animals to the millions of farm animals whom he will now oversee as Secretary of Agriculture?
Although Perdue worked cooperatively with HSUS and HSLS to make dog fighting a felony and banned the use of gas chambers as well as raised awareness of cat and dog population, his nomination may be far from exemplary.
Despite what movie producers might want you to believe, The Humane Party would like to remind you that it is not a dog’s purpose to perform frightening and dangerous stunts to entertain humans.
“Who cares? They’re not human” speaks volumes of our lack of consciousness and conscience towards the sentience of other beings who are perceived as “less than” because they are other than us.
The issue of keeping animals in captivity was recently in the news with the announcement of the last performance of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus this May. While many applaud the announcement, the future of the captive animals is in question. In a related story, The New Yorker featured in its January 16, 2017 issue the shooting and public dissection of a healthy young giraffe named Marius at the Odense Zoo in Denmark last year.
To animal activists throughout the country, Saturday’s announcement that the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus would hold its last performance in May was cause for celebration.
To all the animals still held captive by the company that runs the circus, however, serious questions remain regarding their future well-being.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), one of the more visible and vocal animal rights groups, had been touting its so-called Animals’ Party. This is not a real political party, but a promotional stunt by PETA and another of its campaigns featuring scantily clad female models in order to attract attention.
The Animal Rights 2017 National Conference (AR 2017) will be held August 3-6 at the Hilton Marks Center in Alexandria, Virginia (near Washington, D.C.). Registration opened January 9.
