Why We Write: A Note on Timing, Purpose, and Our Commitment to the Record

At The Humane Herald, we don’t always publish as quickly as traditional news outlets—and we want to be transparent about why.

We are an entirely volunteer-run publication. Every article, interview, editorial, poem, recipe, and report is created by people who give their time freely, often between full-time jobs, activism, caregiving, and community work. We don’t have a newsroom staffed around the clock. We have individuals who care deeply and contribute when they can.

Because of that, we aren’t always able to be prompt.

But we are always intentional.

Even when a story reaches us after the moment has passed, we still choose to write about it. Not for clicks. Not to chase timeliness. But because certain stories must be recorded—ethically, accurately, and with the depth they deserve.

Some things need to be said even if they’re said later.

Some truths need to be preserved even if they no longer trend.

Our purpose is not just to report the world as it moves, but to ensure that important events are not lost to time. We publish to educate, to create context, and to leave a public record that treats animals, ecosystems, and marginalized communities as part of the story—not footnotes to it.

In many cases, mainstream media has already moved on long before the harm is understood or the lessons are learned. That is precisely why we return to those stories. Because the voiceless—human and nonhuman—deserve more than a momentary headline. They deserve documentation.

So while our schedule may not always be fast, it is grounded in compassion. It is shaped by people who care. And it is guided by a commitment to accuracy, integrity, and the long-term historical record.

Thank you for reading, supporting, and remembering with us.

This work—slow, deliberate, and ethical—is part of how we honor the stories that matter.

Editor’s Note

The Humane Herald is powered entirely by volunteers. If you feel called to write, report, research, interview, create visuals, or contribute in any capacity, we welcome new voices. Whether you can offer one article a month or one article a year, your perspective matters.
