This Month in Compassion

June 2025 Edition, By Brandy Whyne Walt-Rose, Editing Coordinator

As the warmth of June settles in, so does a season of reflection, celebration, and advocacy. For those of us committed to living ethically – for the animals, the planet, and each other – this month holds special significance.

Honoring Compassion in Action

June marks Pride Month, a time to celebrate love, identity, and the hard-won rights of LGBTQ+ individuals. At The Humane Herald, we stand in solidarity with those whose voices have been silenced and whose existence challenges oppressive systems. The fight for equality is not isolated – it is deeply connected to every form of liberation, including the rights of animals and the health of our environment.

June is also National PTSD Awareness Month, reminding us of the unseen wounds carried by many—veterans, survivors, and others—whose healing journeys are often unsupported by the systems around them. Compassion means listening, validating, and building a society where no one is left behind.

And on June 19, we observe Juneteenth, a pivotal day of remembrance and celebration in Black American history. As we honor emancipation, we also acknowledge how the legacy of exploitation continues – of people, of animals, of the Earth. True justice is intersectional.

What We’re Exploring This Month

This month, we’re delving into a variety of topics at the intersection of ethics, science, and social justice. From timely reflections to ongoing issues affecting animals, people, and the planet, our goal is to offer thoughtful content that resonates with our readers and sparks meaningful conversation. Stay tuned for a range of perspectives and features from across the movement.

We’ll also reflect on how collective care and systemic change go hand in hand. Whether you’re marching in a Pride parade, planting trees, fostering rescued animals, or simply making space for your own healing – you are part of a powerful ripple.

This Month’s Challenge

Each month, we’ll offer a small, meaningful action to help bring our values into everyday life.

For June:
Write a thank-you letter or email to someone in your life or community whose compassion has inspired you. Let them know they’ve made a difference.
