The Hidden Costs of Fireworks

Brand W. Walt, U.S. Presidential Candidate, The Humane Party

As we reflect on another Labor Day weekend, many of us recall the bright and beautiful displays
of fireworks that lit up our skies. However, as a candidate of the Humane Party and an advocate
for a compassionate and sustainable future, it’s important to consider the less visible, but
significant, downsides of these celebrations.

Environmental Impact
Fireworks are not just dazzling spectacles; they come with a steep environmental cost. Each
explosion releases a cocktail of chemicals, including heavy metals like lead, copper, and barium, which contribute to air and water pollution. The smoke from fireworks contains particulate matter that can linger in the air, exacerbating respiratory issues and contributing to poor air quality. Additionally, the debris from fireworks often ends up in our natural habitats, causing harm to wildlife and polluting our waterways.

Impact on Animals
For animals, the celebration of fireworks is often a time of terror. The loud explosions can cause
panic and distress in domesticated animals, wildlife, and farm animals. Dogs and cats frequently run away from home during fireworks displays, leading to increased numbers of lost “pets” and accidents. Wildlife can suffer from disorientation, abandonment of nests, and in extreme cases, death due to the sheer fright. The Humane Party’s platform of compassion and protection for all living beings demands that we consider these impacts seriously.

Impact on Individuals with PTSD
For individuals living with PTSD, particularly veterans and survivors of trauma, fireworks can
trigger painful flashbacks and anxiety attacks. The sudden, loud noises mimic the sounds of
gunfire and explosions, making what should be a time of celebration into one of stress and fear.
As a nation that values the mental health and well-being of its citizens, we must acknowledge
and address these consequences.

Other Considerations
Beyond the environmental and psychological impacts, fireworks pose a significant safety risk.
Every year, thousands of people are injured by fireworks, with some accidents resulting in
permanent disabilities or even death. The financial costs associated with these injuries, as well
as the potential for fires started by errant fireworks, strain our emergency services and
healthcare systems.

Moreover, the production and disposal of fireworks contribute to the exploitation of labor, often
in countries with poor working conditions and inadequate labor protections. As a party
committed to ethical practices and humane treatment for all, the Humane Party must take a
stand against industries that exploit workers in this way.

A Call for Change
As we move forward, it’s crucial that we seek alternatives to traditional fireworks that align with
our values of sustainability, compassion, and safety. Laser light shows, drone displays, and other innovative forms of celebration can provide the same sense of wonder without the harmful side effects. By advocating for these alternatives, we can ensure that our celebrations are inclusive, safe, and environmentally responsible.

Together, we can work toward a future where our festivities reflect our values—a future where
we can celebrate without compromising the health of our planet, the well-being of our animals,
and the safety of our fellow citizens.
